What is Affordable Care Act?

The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama Care or Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act PPACA, is the law that mandates that everyone in the United States maintain health insurance coverage.

To achieve this, the law establishes “health insurance exchanges” for people who do have access to health insurance; establishes new rules for what insurance plans have to cover and how much they can charge for certain services; and establishes supports for people who cannot afford health insurance coverage.

What is a health insurance marketplace?

A health insurance marketplace for Affordable Care Act is an online marketplace where people can compare and purchase health insurance coverage that fits their needs and their budget.  Every state will have their own marketplace.  Some states will operate their own insurance marketplace.  Other state insurance marketplaces will be run by or in partnership with the federal government.

The insurance marketplace is expected to open on October 1, 2013.
